God has an eternal purpose to be expressed through man in the church, the Body of Christ, and in order to fulfill His purpose He has an economy, a plan of action (Ephesians 3:8-11).
In His economy, God is building His church. The church as the Body of Christ is not an inanimate physical building but a living, organic, spiritual building.
Thus, the Body of Christ is built up not by an outward process of construction but by an inward process of spiritual growth. Ephesians 2:21 says, “All the building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord.”
Spiritual growth, like physical growth, takes place when we eat and drink. In John 6:57, the Lord Jesus said, “He who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me.” In John 7:37, He said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” Verse 39 tells us that He was speaking about spiritual drinking: “But this He said concerning the Spirit.”
Just as in physical eating and drinking, when we eat and drink of the Lord spiritually by praying, reading the Bible, singing, or fellowshipping with other believers, a metabolic process takes place within us. The negative elements of our old, natural life are carried away, and the new element of Christ as the life-giving Spirit is added into us.
Through this process, we gradually and spontaneously express less of our self and more of Christ. Second Corinthians 3:18 says, “But we all with unveiled face, beholding and reflecting like a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord Spirit.”
